PRP for Skin Rejuvenation and Hair Loss

PRP for Skin Rejuvenation and Hair Loss

Platelets are responsible for blood clotting, preventing excessive bleeding from a cut or wound. Platelets also release growth factors when they break down via platelet degradation which helps tissues to grow and repair by stimulating cell regeneration. This is why it is becoming an increasingly popular treatment for a variety of medical conditions and for cosmetic reasons.

Platelet rich plasma (henceforth PRP) is prepared by takin a patient’s blood and spinning it at a high speed in a centrifuge in order to separate the components of the blood so that the PRP may be extracted and injected into the desired area.

PRP can be used to improve the appearance of skin as the growth factors released can stimulate fibroblast generation, which are cells that release collagen, and elastin production. Both elastic and collagen are proteins that can improve the appearance of skin and slow the ageing process by helping to tighten sagging skin and reducing fine lines, wrinkles, and scarring. It is thought to be a beneficial treatment for those with acne or rosacea (a condition that causes redness in the face). PRP is a natural alternative to fillers and is thicker, so the growth factors remain in the area for longer allowing them to have maximum effect. Furthermore, PRP can be used in areas which are difficult to reach and where it is not possible to used laser therapy, for example, under eyes. Injecting PRP to improve the appearance of skin is often called the vampire facial and has been used by celebrities including Angelina Jolie and Kim Kardashian to improve facial appearance.

When injected into the scalp, PRP secretes and reintroduces growth factors into hair follicles helping them to repair and enhancing hair growth. PRP can therefore be used as an alternative treatment to a hair transplant without the risk of scarring.
