How can the Pneumonia Vaccine Help You?

Pneumonia or Pneumoccocal vaccination can improve your antibody response to fight pneumonia reducing the chance of serious ill health and fatality. Antibodies are proteins produced in the body to get rid of disease-carrying organisms.

There are two types of vaccination for pneumonia, Pneumovax 23 which protects against 23 types of pneumococcal bacteria and Prevnar 13 which protects against 13 types of pneumococcal bacteria. There are no serious side effects to the vaccine although occasionally it may cause a mild fever, redness or swelling at the injection site.

Babies, people over 65 and those with underlying health conditions are offered one or both of these vaccines on the NHS. What is Pneumonia?

Pneumonia is a lung condition, caused by bacterial or fungal infection, that can have serious health implications. In some cases pneumonia can lead to fatality. The disease manifests when the alveoli, or air sacs of your lungs become inflamed and fill with fluid. Pneumonia can develop rapidly and symptoms can include severe chest pain, a cough, difficulty breathing and a temperature.

Who can get Pneumonia?

Pneumonia can occur at any age although infants under 2 years and the elderly, aged 65+ are more at risk. When the body’s immune system is challenged with other acute illnesses such as influenza or coronavirus, the risk of secondary pneumonia is higher. It isn’t just the additional time the doctors can spend with you it’s the holistic approach to fixing problems rather than just throwing medication at symptoms.My doctor is keen to work in partnership with me; he trusts that my experience and research over the years has helped me understand my own body and supports with his medical expertise.
