What is Iron Deficiency?
Iron deficiency is also know an Anaemia. Anemia occurs when there are low levels of haemoglobin in the red bloods cells. Issues such as blood loss or digestive problems may lead of an iron deficiency and anaemia. Providing iron intravenously can be more effective as it relies on the iron being delivered in a way that bypasses the digestive process.
Levitas Clinic Guildford provides an intravenous treatment for patients who have low levels of iron in the body. Over time low levels of iron can lead to anaemia, where haemoglobin levels are low or red blood cells are fewer than normal.
How Does it Work?
Ferritin includes iron in the form of minute particles of iron with a sugar coating. The iron is gradually released from the sugar coating into the body. Iron is required to transport oxygen around the body and also has other important roles to play in keeping your body healthy.
What is the Process?
The process will involve a consultation with a clinician before the treatment. The doctor will require information on issues including your medical history. They will also review any medication that you may be taking. The consultation will thoroughly cover any potential side effects of the treatment. During this consultation, blood tests may need to be taken which come at an extra cost. The infusion itself should take around 30 minutes.
How Many Treatments will I Need?
You may only need a single dose or you may need to return for further treatments to complete your course. Once you have finished your course of treatment you may be asked to return to have a further blood test to assess your progress. At future appointments, your doctor will continue to check that the amount of iron in your body stays within the right range for you. You may also need further courses of treatment in the future.
