What Does the Antibody Test Look For?
The majority of patients who recover from Coronavirus have been found to produce antibodies; initially an IgM antibody and then an IgG antibody during the recovery phase. The detection IgG antibody shows whether a person has previously been infected by SARS-Cov-2.
When Can The Covid 19 Antibody Test be Done?
Testing should be undertaken 17 days or more following exposure or onset of symptoms.
The immune system reacts to the SARS Cov-2 by producing antibodies from a few days to 2 weeks and beyond. Specific IgG antibodies are produced at the later stages of the infection to SARS Cov-2.
The persistence of IgG antibodies allows the identification of people who have been infected by SARS -Cov-2.The test development relating to SARS-Cov-2 is rapidly evolving and Levitas Clinic Guildford is in constant communication with updates from the approved laboratories used.
What Does the PCR Test Look For?
COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-COV-2 virus. The genetic information of the virus is RNA and with the PCR technique the presence of viral RNA can be detected. Therefore, the test can demonstrate if you have an active case of the infection i.e. if you currently have the virus.
Test sample
During the test procedure, a sample is taken from your throat and nose.

How Accurate is the Antibody Test?
Medical tests are usually measured for accuracy by looking at two criteria –
Specificity and Sensitivity. The higher the percentage, the more accurate the result.
The test is 100% Specific
A test that has 100% specificity will identify 100% of patients who do not have the disease.
The test is 97.5 % Sensitive
A test that is 100% sensitive will identify all patients who have the disease.
All results are interpreted in context of the clinical symptoms. It has been recognised that there can be weak or delayed responses in patients who have conditions where the immune system is compromised.
